School of Foreign Studies

The School, formerly known as English Department founded in May, 2007, was renamed School of Foreign Studies in 2018. It has 67 faculty members, among whom there are 49 full-time teachers, 26 professors and associate professors, 5 doctors (4 are studying for doctor's degree) and 1 foreign teacher. More than 50% of the teachers have attended overseas studying and visiting programs.In line with the philosophy of teacher-oriented education and student-oriented teaching, the School aims to cultivate English talents capable of communicating in the field of medicine and medical talents capable of communicating with the outside world in English, and attaches great importance to the collaborative cultivation of students' knowledge, ability and quality.

Now it offers one undergraduate program—English Major, which dates back to the English associate degree set in 2001. It started to provide undergraduate course for English majors from 2010, and now enrolls 90 English majors every year. The School has a portfolio of Medical English, TESOL and Translation which focus on cultivating practical talents who are solid in language capacity, competent in medical knowledge and English skills, and extensive in cultural knowledge, so as to skillfully apply the knowledge and skills into translation, teaching and other work in various medical and health enterprises, institutions and educational institutions. 2017 witnessed the launch of a joint training program between the School and Harding University, US. The School, while caters to the University’s development demands, aims at bringing up high quality English talents who have inter-disciplinary vision under the educational philosophy of“solid foundation, strong capability, high quality, and high employment rate”. It highlights the disciplinary, humanistic and professional features of English study, pays attention to the education of cultural consciousness, cultural confidence and cultural self-improvement in English education, and strengthens the education of English majors in their mindset, literacy, thinking, vision and behavior, all of which lead to the form of a solid undergraduate education, practical language skills training and clear employment-oriented characteristics.

The School offers College English courses and elective courses to 21 majors. It has completed two university-level online courses (English for Medical Academic Purpose and English for Medical Humanities), which indicates that a College-English education and teaching system with the characteristics of medicine has gradually taken shape. Medical humanities-oriented English course is added to the medical undergraduate talent training program to highlight the humanistic education for medical students. The teaching quality of College English and Medical English education has been gradually improved, which strongly supports the in-depth professional learning and future career planning of medical undergraduates. Postgraduate English is conducted in modules to highlight the cultivation of medical literature reading ability and medical academic writing capacity.

The School consists of four teaching and research offices: English Language and Culture, Medical English, Medical Humanities-oriented English, and College English. It enjoys a language training center and a simultaneous interpretation classroom, and a reference room. Besides, the Schools also has 3 administrative offices: Office of Regulatory Affairs, Office of Teaching Affairs, and Office of Students Affairs. Last but not least, it boasts three university-level key disciplines (Medical English, Medical Humanities-oriented English and English Language and Literature), and one university-level scientific research platform (Center for Medical Language and Culture Research, a member of Think Tank Alliance in Shaanxi Province)

The School has been clarifying its orientation in discipline development. Now there are research teams for medical translation, medical academic writing, medical humanities education, narrative medicine, doctor-patient discourse, and health communication. All the achievements in both teaching and research have been converging to the field of medical English. Major breakthroughs have been made in textbook compilation. An associate professor served as the editor-in-chief in the publication of a national ESP textbook for the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" (A Mini-Course of English on Issues & Solutions in Clinical Medicine, published by Fudan University Press); 3 New Medical English national textbooks for the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" have been published by Fudan University Press (Video-based English Course of Narrative Medicine, Global Overview of Issues in Psychological Health, and Global Overview of Issues in Medical Laws and Ethics, ); New Medical English won the second prize in the evaluation of excellent textbooks for regular colleges and universities in Shaanxi Province. Additionally, two monographs have been translated: Neonatal and Pediatric Rspiratory Care—A Patient Case Method published by People's Medical Publishing House and Color Digital Atlas of Pathology published by Xi'an Jiaotong University Press.

In 2019, the school held The Third National Medical English Teaching and Academic Seminar. The medical English translation team has participated many times in the translation practice of international medical conferences such as general medicine, nursing, respiratory therapy, medical humanities research and humanistic hospital construction international summit forum, and one of them served as the medical interpreter of the sixth batch of Chinese medical group aid to Malawi. In July 2019, it undertook the subtitle translation work of Two Hundred Years of Surgery (produced by the Central New Film Group, Beijing Discovery Documentary Media Co, Ltd) shown by CCTV Recording Channel. 5 teachers are respectively assuming the office of executive director of the Traditional Culture Translation and International Communication Committee of the China Association for the Promotion of Traditional Chinese Medicine Research, director of China Educational Linguistics Research Association, director of Foreign Language Teaching Research Association of Universities in Shaanxi Province, director of Shaanxi Provincial Literature Research Association, and director of Foreign Languages Teaching of Universities in Shaanxi Province.

In recent years, a certain percentage of graduates of English majors have been admitted to graduate students in English translation, Chinese international education, foreign languages and literature, sports rehabilitation, master of law, journalism and communication, education, public health management, etc, being enrolled in many domestic universities such as Central University of Finance and Economics, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Shaanxi Normal University,Xi'an Electronic Science and Technology University, Northwest University, Xi’an International Studies University, Chang’an University, Shanxi University, Xi’an University of Technology, Northwest Normal University, Sichuan International Studies University, Sichuan Normal University, etc,and many foreign universities such as Texas State University, Florida State University, Harding University and the University of Southampton; Royal Holloway University, Ireland Maynooth University and Ireland Cork University.
