School of Basic Medical Sciences was founded in 1996. It consists of ten teaching departments (Human anatomy, Histology and embryology,Physiology, Biochemistry and molecular biology, Pharmacology and toxicology,Pathology, Pathophysiology, Cell biology and genetics, Immunology, Pathogen microbiology), three experimental teaching centers (Human anatomy, Morphology,Ergology), one research institute (Institute of basic medical research), and one key laboratory (Xi’an Key Laboratory of Pathogenic Microorganism and Tumor Immunity).

School of Basic Medical Sciences undertakes the task of teaching basic medical courses to undergraduates and further education students. More than 30 main courses are offered including: Systematic anatomy, Regional anatomy, Sectional anatomy, Anesthesia anatomy, Histology and embryology, Physiology, Anatomical physiology, Biochemistry and molecular biology, Pharmacology and toxicology, Pathology, Pathophysiology, Cell biology, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, parasitology, and General Introduction to basic medicine.

There are 132 teaching staff in theschool, among whom there are 118 full-time teachers, with 24 professors and 51 associate professors.There are 69 faculties with doctoral degree, and 38 with master’s degree. There are now 5 provincial famous teacher, 2 provincial advanced individual in teachers’ professional ethics, 2 provincial advanced worker, 1 national health system advanced individual, 1 provincial young and middle-aged leaders in science and technology, 1 outstanding young talent of Shaanxi province, 2 top young talents of Shaanxi province, 4 stars of science and technology in Shaanxi province, 1 advanced teaching management workers of Shaanxi province office of education, 3 university-level famous teachers. Faculty structure is reasonable and can meet the teaching needs for theSchool of Basic Medical Sciences.

School of Basic Medical Sciences currently has laboratories with a total area of about 19,000 square meters. The total value of teaching equipment and instruments in the Human Science Museum, the Human Anatomy Specimen Gallery, the Pathological Gross Specimen and Embryo Specimen Gallery, the Morphological Digital Interactive Microscope Center, and the Regional Anatomy Laboratory is more than 25 million yuan. The three experimental teaching centers of ergology, morphology and human anatomy are “Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Shaanxi Province”. They take on research projects of various levels and are responsible for teaching basic medical experiment courses to students of different majors, creating good atmosphere for the cultivation of students’ scientific research literacy and operational skills. The value of large scientific research instruments and equipmentin the Institute of basic medical research and Xi’an Key Laboratory of Pathogenic Microorganism and Tumor Immunity is over 15 million yuan. Xi’an Key Laboratory of Pathogenic Microorganism and Tumor Immunity is the first approved municipal key laboratory, and the Molecular Virology and Viral Immunology Laboratory is the first approved biosafety level II laboratory in our university.

In the past 5 years,School of Basic Medical Sciences has hosted a total of 155 scientific research projects of various levels, including 12 national natural science foundation projects, 27 projects at ministerial and provincial level, 15 projects at bureau level, 93 projects at school level, with a total project funds of 14.9231 million yuan. More than 350 research papers were published, out of which 163 are in core journals, and more than 100 are SCI and Medline papers. Two hundred twenty-seven patents have been applied for or granted.

School of Basic Medical Sciences has made great achievements over the years, and has won the third prize of Science and Technology award of Shaanxi province and the second prize of Science and Technology of Shaanxi institutions of higher education; 1 first prize of Teaching achievements of Shaanxi Institutions of higher education, 2 first prize of Excellent teaching materials of Shaanxi Institutions of higher education, 3 second prizes of Excellent teaching materials of Shaanxi Institutions of higher education; In teaching competitions at provincial level or above, 1 person has won the special prize, 10 people have won the first prize, 8 people have won the second prize and 6 the third prize, 2 the excellent prize. One national level first-class undergraduate course, 2 provincial-level first-class undergraduate course and one provincial-level open online course has been approved.

School of Basic Medical Sciences is still in the process of development, and will continue to carry forward the spirit of Xi’an Medical University: Perseverance andConstantSelf-improvement.Now it is moving towards the construction of “first-class disciplines” so as to make greater contributions to the development of the university.
