20 years ago, from southern Himalayas,17-year-old Rajiv came toXi'an,ShaanxiProvince, for studying. From unacquaintance to familiarity, just likedNepali Xuanzang comingfromKatmandu,Rajiv has been closely tied to China.
Duringhis20 years’ stay in China, Rajivgraduatedfrom Xi’an Jiaotong University.He was awardedoutstanding doctoral student,outstanding master student, outstanding graduate, andwonthe National Natural Science Foundation of Foreign YouthScholarsResearchFund. He also isthe first Nepalese who selecteddistinguished expert of“Hundred TalentsProgram” inShaanxiProvince.At present, Rajiv is carrying out medical researches in Xi’an Medical University.
Xi'an, formerly known as Chang'an, is the world famous Chinese ancient capital forthirteen dynasties. Everything’s hard in the beginning. Afterbiddingfarewellto his hometown,traveling thousands of miles,this Nepali teenager arrived in Xi’an. He experienced different cultures from his hometown. Chineserapid development surprisedhim and let him deeply fell in lovewiththis country.
“I’vebeen in Xi’anfor 20 years, nowI recognized as‘theChinese’. The place whereI live wasremote place before, but nowit’s a prosperous area, tall buildings everywhere. The first time Icameto China, I had to transit in Shanghai, now thedirectflight from Katmandu to Xi’an is goingtoopen soon.” Rajivspeaksfluent ChineseandsomeShaanxi dialect.Smile always showed upon his thin swarthy face.
As a medical expert, Rajiv believes that traditional Chinese medicine and Nepalese traditional medicine have a lot in common: bothbase on herbal medicine and other natural products andbothhave long history. Rajiv said, “China has rich herbresources. InNepal, due to significantdifferences in elevation,a lot of different herbs grow there. The two countries have profound foundation in medical cooperation.” He also said.
"In Nepal, we haven’t establishedany sister school relationship withChinese colleges and universities.I sincerely hope and invite universities inShaanxi toestablish more medical centers, research centers and medical universities in Nepal.This can do much good to Nepalese society, people and China-Nepal relationship. We can work together.” His eyes were full of sincerity and longing.
In addition to medical expert, Rajiv has another important identity whichis theenvoy of cultural exchanges. “I went to China with another sevenNepali friends, andthey allleft China one by one,only me stayed.” He said, “I like Chinese culture,Ilike Xi'an, I sincerelyhopeto do something forcommunication betweenthetwo countries.”
Rajiv has deep love forbothChina and Nepal.InWenchuan earthquake in 2008, hemadedonation andjoin the relief without hesitation. In2016, hugeearthquake happened in Nepal, he donated allhis savings and organized areliefteam of 100 people by himself.
He has been committed to promotingChina-Nepal friendlyrelation. Under his constanteffort, HimalayanFriendlyAssociation established successfully.
Rajiv said that China and Nepal has long history of friendly relationship. OneBeltOneRoadproposalhas brought new opportunities for cooperation. In 1995, Xi’an and Kathmandu becamesistercites. Xi’an wasthe first city to establish friendly relations with Kathmandu.
Rajiv hopes to do more work inXi’an,the birthplace of the ancient Silk Road, to promote communication between the two countries. Besides ofmedicalresearching work, he reads Chinese books everyday.He called this “Charge”.By reading, he could know of Chinese wisdom, better understand China's national conditions andtheOneBeltOneRoad proposal.
“China’s OneBeltOneRoad proposal is good for neighboring countries. Theycould climb aboard and develop quickly” Rajiv said.
“There are a lot of people in Nepal have no idea aboutwhatOneBeltOneRoad proposal exactly is.Many people see China as it was decades ago. In the past 20 years, I went to many places in China, experiencing their cultural features and witnessing their significant changes. I’m willing to tell Nepalese what I see in China. For doing this, I make websites and give interviews on Nepalese media, telling people China’s rapid changes and only the stable development of China-Nepal relationship can bring benefits to their people” said Rajiv.
In March 2016, drivenby Rajiv, Xi'an MedicalUniversity and Nepal National Academy of Medical Sciences signed cooperation agreement, and initiated the establishment of“China-NepalFriendly Medical ResearchCenter of Rajiv Kumar Jha”. This laboratory will be officially put into use in October this year. It will become a symbol ofthe two counturies’ friendly cooperation in the field of medical research.
